On this Mother’s Day, as we reflect on the role of motherhood and express our gratitude to the many mothers that have impacted our lives–and as I idly flip the silver dollar I keep in my pocket–I am struck by the choice of a woman–the ancient Roman goddess Libertas, or Lady Liberty–as the symbol of freedom.

I recently received this from Michael Badnarik. On his website a while back I voted for Minneapolis as a great place for him to come and give his Constitution Class. He recently reset all of the votes and is asking for people to return to the site and vote for the cities that would like him to visit so he can get accurate, up-to-date numbers.

A character in Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan, when told the theory of Pythagoras that the earth is round and revolves around the sun, replies:
“What an utter fool! Couldn’t he use his eyes?”
Flat-earth geocentrism is the quintessential modern epithet applied to an opponent who either can’t or refuses to see past the immediately evident phenomena and grasp the larger truth.
Despite its tired, clichéd status, it is still a great metaphor.
