Dump D.C.! The 50-State Secession

by Mike Phenow

Those familiar with Libertarian thought are surely also familiar with the notion that secession–from any form of association–is a fundamental right that applies to any subset of a society all the way down to the individual.

Many see state secession from the union as the ultimate solution to the problems of the United States government. But, as soon as one starts to consider this course of action, one shudders to think of the wrath that would likely be rained down upon the poor souls brave enough to try it.

In a short article from The Libertarian Enterprise, Paul Bonneau makes a compelling case for the feasibility of a secession attempted by majority of the states into their own states or smaller confederations.

What’s even more intriguing is the case he makes for the fact that the conditions that would be most conducive to bringing about popular support for such a bold move are the very conditions we see developing before our eyes.

“The American Empire, like all empires, is about to end. A 50-state secession would be the least destructive, most promising path to that end. It would restore the early promise of America, that has been all but lost in the last several decades. Dump D.C.!”

An exhilarating prospect.
