Independence Day
In a contemplative mood on this Independence Day, I took a short break from my work to ruminate on the meaning of the day. I find myself sorely conflicted about the continued observance of this holiday.
A holiday inspired by the truly revolutionary and enlightened philosophy of principled scholars is celebrated by ignorant fools employing the most asinine methods handy.
A holiday marked by a steadfast defense of, loyalty to, and love of one’s own property is often celebrated by a mass exodus to anywhere but home.
A holiday whose primary impetus is the deep appreciation of a (remarkably short and accessible) document, is enthusiastically celebrated by a mass of people, precious few who have bothered to read or understand it.
A holiday whose driving spirit is that of the inherent freedom of individuals and the constitutional republic founded to protect that freedom, is celebrated by a citizenry that has long since trashed any semblance of these founding principles and has instead instituted for itself a brutal system of fascist socialism.
In the spirit of these bitter ironies, I will leave you with two videos, one of a Member of the European Parliament whose lucid articulation of our founding principles surpasses that of all but a few of our fellow countrymen, and the other of a group of charlatans representing the intellectual depravity of Hollywood reciting the text of the document that is the object of today’s observances:
